Extremely Rare Parry–Wilkes-Barre Super Deluxe Grade D — Transition Gun
Circa 1890s | Serial No. 563 | 12 Gauge | Fine Damascus Barrels | Exposed Hammers
An exceptionally rare and beautifully crafted Parry–Wilkes-Barre Super Deluxe Grade D Transition Gun, a 12-gauge, exposed-hammer double-barrel shotgun, serial number 563, representing an extraordinary period in late-19th-century American firearms manufacturing. The original, unremarkable condition of this is amazing! Looks like a 20 year old shotgun, not 130 years!
This remarkable shotgun is particularly significant as a transition gun from the Parry Fire Arms Company of Ithaca, New York, to the Wilkes-Barre Gun Company of Pennsylvania. During this transition, Parry’s established designs, machinery, and existing components became part of the Wilkes-Barre manufacturing operation. The combination of traditional exposed hammers, elaborate finishing, and premium components makes this firearm an especially interesting example of that manufacturing transition.
The shotgun features beautifully figured, fine-pattern Damascus barrels displaying intricate, tightly woven scroll formations, extensive ornamental engraving, highly figured walnut furniture, elaborate hand-cut checkering, traditional exposed hammers, and double triggers. These features reflect the exceptional craftsmanship associated with premium American sporting arms of the period.
The barrel assembly bears the matching serial number 563, an FD marking, and an 1890 patent-date inscription. The original buttplate retains the inscription “Parry Fire Arms Co., Ithaca, N.Y.”, providing a direct physical connection to the original Parry manufacturing operation.
What makes this firearm particularly compelling is its combination of Parry-era design and high-end workmanship within the historical transition to Wilkes-Barre production. Its finely patterned Damascus barrels, extensive engraving, exceptional walnut, and intricate checkering distinguish it from more commonly encountered utilitarian sporting shotguns of the era.
The short operating histories of both manufacturers, coupled with the specialized craftsmanship and unusual transitional characteristics of this firearm, make it a noteworthy survivor from a fascinating chapter of American firearms history.
An exceptional antique American double-barrel shotgun, combining historical significance, premium craftsmanship, distinctive transitional features, and considerable collector appeal. A remarkable centerpiece for a serious collection of rare 19th-century American sporting firearms.
The original, unremarkable condition of this is amazing! Looks like a 20 year old shotgun, not 130 years! You’re invited and encouraged to see in person in Gillett, PA 16925.
